9-Day Kilimanjaro Trek via Rongai Route
Rongai is the only route that starts on Kilimanjaro's northern side, close enough to the Kenyan border that your first day passes through Nalemuru village before entering a pine forest most other climbers never see. The trade-off for that solitude is a flatter, more gradual ascent than on Machame or Lemosho — good for pacing, but without the same climb-high-sleep-low elevation swings. That is why the acclimatisation night at Mawenzi Tarn matters more here than on almost any other route. You will walk for seven trekking days, cross the lunar Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, and descend via the Marangu trail on the mountain's opposite side, so you see two entirely different faces of Kilimanjaro in one trek.
Climb Mount Kilimanjaro on a 9-day Rongai Route adventure, the only trail that approaches the mountain from Tanzania’s northern side near the Kenyan border. Starting from Moshi, Kijani Tours guides you through one of Kilimanjaro’s quieter and more remote landscapes, where peaceful forests, open moorlands, and dramatic alpine scenery create a more intimate trekking experience.
The Rongai Route is known for its gradual ascent and uncrowded trails, making it an excellent choice for trekkers who prefer a slower, more peaceful journey. Unlike routes that rely on frequent altitude changes for acclimatisation, this itinerary includes a dedicated rest and acclimatisation day at Mawenzi Tarn, beneath the rugged peaks of Mawenzi. This extra time allows your body to adapt while you enjoy one of Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful high-altitude camps.
Over nine days, you will cross diverse ecological zones, camp beside alpine landscapes, and approach the summit through the dramatic Kibo Saddle before your final push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Your descent follows the Marangu Route, allowing you to experience a completely different side of the mountain rather than retracing your footsteps.
With experienced local guides, a dedicated mountain crew, and careful attention to responsible trekking practices, this Rongai Route offers more than a summit attempt. It is an opportunity to connect with Kilimanjaro’s landscapes, understand its ecosystems, and experience the mountain through the knowledge of those who call its foothills home.

This preparation day is an important part of your climb. Your guide will review the Rongai Route, explain the acclimatisation strategy, check your equipment, and ensure you have everything you need for the mountain.
Any missing gear can be rented locally in Moshi before departure.
Your guide will also introduce you to the mountain crew who will support your journey, including porters and cooks whose experience and dedication are essential to a safe and successful trek.

Day 2: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
Entering Kilimanjaro Through the Northern Forests
After breakfast, you leave Moshi and drive towards Rongai Gate on the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. After registration, your trek begins through quiet farmland before entering the montane forest zone. The first section of the Rongai Route is peaceful and gradual, allowing your body to adjust to the rising elevation.
The forest is home to a variety of bird species and occasionally to wildlife such as colobus monkeys and other forest animals. As you climb higher, the vegetation changes. The dense forest gradually gives way to moorland, revealing your first views of Kilimanjaro’s higher peaks. Your first night is spent at Simba Camp, also known as First Cave, where you rest under the mountain sky.
Trek Information
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Trekking: Time: 3–4 hours
Altitude Change: 1,950m to 2,625m
Environment: Montane forest to moorland
Overnight: Simba Camp

Day 3: Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp
Across Moorlands Toward the Alpine Zone
Today’s trek takes you further into Kilimanjaro’s wilderness. Leaving Simba Camp behind, you continue through open moorland, where the views broaden, and the mountain begins to reveal its scale. The trail gradually climbs towards Second Cave, where you stop for a rest and lunch before continuing towards Kikelewa Camp.
Along the way, giant heather plants and Kilimanjaro’s unique high-altitude vegetation become more prevalent. The eastern glaciers of Kibo may appear in the distance, offering your first reminder of the summit ahead. Kikelewa Camp sits in a beautiful alpine setting, surrounded by dramatic landscapes, and provides an ideal place to rest before the higher sections of the climb.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Leaving Kikelewa Camp, you climb steadily through Kilimanjaro’s alpine zone towards Mawenzi Tarn Camp, one of the most scenic and peaceful campsites on the Rongai Route. As you gain altitude, the landscape shifts from moorland to a rugged volcanic environment, with giant senecio plants and dramatic mountain scenery. By midday, you reach Mawenzi Tarn, a beautiful campsite beside an alpine lake, surrounded by the sharp peaks of Mawenzi. The afternoon is for rest, acclimatisation, and enjoying the quiet beauty of this remote part of Kilimanjaro before continuing your journey.
