From Community Empowerment to Responsible Travel

Kijani Tours was founded in 2022 to create meaningful journeys that connect travellers with Tanzania's people, wildlife, cultures, and landscapes, while supporting responsible, regenerative tourism. Drawing on founder Wolfgang's background in community empowerment, every experience is guided by responsibility, integrity, authenticity, personalisation, sustainability, and regenerative travel, delivering lasting benefits for guests, local communities, and the natural environment.
Before founding Kijani Tours in 2022, Wolfgang worked in Tanzania's community empowerment sector, supporting programmes that linked international volunteers and internship students with local communities.
Through this work, he observed something important: many visitors came to Tanzania wanting more than to complete an assignment or see famous attractions. They wanted to understand the people, cultures, landscapes, and stories behind the country.
They wanted connection.
That experience inspired a question:
Could tourism create the same meaningful benefits for communities when it is designed with purpose, responsibility, and transparency?
Kijani Tours was born from that question.
Today, the company designs journeys that connect travellers with Tanzania's natural heritage, living cultures, and local communities, ensuring tourism creates value beyond the traveller's experience.
Why Kijani Tours Exists
That means choosing local partners, working with Tanzanian teams, respecting cultures, supporting conservation, and designing journeys that benefit the places we visit. Many travellers visit Tanzania to witness incredible wildlife, climb Mount Kilimanjaro, explore ancient landscapes, or relax along the Indian Ocean. Kijani Tours exists to help travellers experience Tanzania through meaningful connections. We believe tourism should not simply take people through places. It should help people understand them.
What Makes Us Different
A Local Perspective Behind Every Journey
Locally Owned and Operated
Kijani Tours is a Tanzanian-owned company based in Moshi, at the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro. Our local roots enable us to design journeys informed by firsthand knowledge, trusted relationships, and a deeper understanding of Tanzania.
Community Empowerment Background
Our approach to tourism is shaped by years of experience working with communities and international visitors. This experience shapes how we build partnerships, design experiences, and think about tourism's role in Tanzania.
Personalised Travel Design
We do not believe Tanzania can be experienced through a standard template. Every traveller has different interests, abilities, expectations, and reasons for visiting. We create journeys around your travel style, interests, pace, and goals, tailoring every itinerary to how you want to experience Tanzania.
Responsible Mountain and Safari Operations
From mountain crew welfare to ethical wildlife viewing, responsible operations are integral to how we work every day. We believe the quality of a journey depends not only on what guests experience but also on how that experience is created.
Experiences Beyond the Checklist
We focus on understanding Tanzania, not merely collecting destinations. Our journeys connect travellers with wildlife ecosystems, local cultures, conservation stories, traditional knowledge, and landscapes shaped by generations.
Responsible and Regenerative Travel in Practice
Supporting Local People Respecting Mountain Crews
A successful Kilimanjaro climb depends on the people who make it possible, so we support local communities by ensuring fair treatment, safe working conditions, proper equipment, and respect and dignity for every mountain crew member, creating opportunities that strengthen livelihoods and honour the teams who guide every climb.
Protecting Tanzania's Cultural and Natural Heritage
Our journeys encourage responsible interaction with Tanzania’s landscapes and wildlife by promoting ethical wildlife viewing, reducing environmental impact, respecting protected areas, and raising conservation awareness, and we preserve culture through respectful experiences that treat culture not as a performance but as an opportunity for travellers to meet communities respectfully, learn from local knowledge, and understand Tanzania’s living traditions.
Our Regenerative Travel Vision
For Kijani Tours, regenerative travel means creating journeys that leave positive value behind; we design trips to strengthen communities, protect ecosystems, preserve culture, and foster meaningful connections between visitors and hosts.
